"Zarya" – a partisan newspaper

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the underground activities of the Brest regional newspaper "Zarya" during the Great Patriotic War in the territory of Brest region temporarily occupied by Nazi invaders. The conditions under which the Treaty of Riga was concluded on March 18, 1921, which ended the Soviet-Polish war (1919–1921) are considered. Information about the socio-economic situation and culture of Western Belorussia, which was under Polish rule from 1921 to 1939, is given. The reunification of Western Belorussia with the BSSR and the USSR in 1939 is briefly described. The information about the beginning of the activity of the Belarusian-language newspaper "Zara" as an organ of the Brest regional committee of the Communist Bolshevik Party of Belarus and the regional executive committee is given. The article describes the occupation regime on the territory of Brest region in 1941–1944. The information about the printed propaganda of the occupation authorities in the territory of Brest region, about the Soviet periodicals and underground printing houses in the temporarily occupied territories of Belarus is given. A detailed description is given of how a group of senior party and Komsomol members, including the editor and typesetter of the underground newspaper "Zarya", made their way from Moscow to the Brest forests in March 1943. The information about the partisan everyday life of the team of the "Zarya" and the staff of the underground newspaper is given. The activity of the Brest underground newspaper "Zarya" is analyzed: the content of the leaflets issued by the newspaper, the main sections of the newspaper and the materials published on its pages. It is shown that the underground partisan press during the Great Patriotic War in the temporarily occupied territory had a huge organizing value and was a formidable weapon. It is concluded that the Brest underground newspaper "Zarya" made an important contribution to the fight against the enemy and to the overall victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War.
