SCIENCE STUDIES AND INFORMATION METRICS
The article presents the results of the analysis of the publication activity of the Central Science Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in the international scientific citation databases Web of Science, Scopus, Russian Index of Science Citation (RISC), as well as in open foreign scientific publication search services. Data on the main bibliometric indicators are presented: the number of publications, citations, and the H-index of an organization. A comparison of quantitative indicators in scientometric systems was carried out, almost identical scientific content of the organization in Web of Science and Scopus was revealed, and a dynamic growth of publications in the RISC was noticeable. The high quantitative indicators expected by the authors from open bibliographic systems are not justified; the library's publications are included in the general profile of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. It is concluded that open resources can act as an alternative to commercial systems when searching for information by authors and country, but for the analysis of the publication activity of an organization it is better to use the widely recognized ones – Scopus, Web of Science, and RISC.
LIBRARY, BIBLIOGRAPHIC AND INFORMATION SUPPORT
The article considers the results of bibliometric analysis of the input document flow to the database (DB) ‘AGROS’, conducted in the Central Scientific Agricultural Library (CSAL) as a part of scientific research in 2024. The aim of the study was to investigate the structure of the document flow entering the CSAL’s DB ‘AGROS’ in order to obtain data on its development and further use them to improve the quality of the library's DB and other information products and services. The document flow was studied over a five-year period from 2019-2023 in the AGROS DB, which reflects all documents received into the CSAL collection. The study analyses all branches of agro-industrial complex; the article provides data on the analysis of micro-flows on agricultural biology, farming, plant protection, and agricultural mechanisation. The analysis of single document thematic micro-flows was carried out according to the following indicators: quantitative change of the document flow over the years; thematic distribution of the document flow over the years. The boundaries of each thematic micro-flow were set according to the 3rd level of the Industry-Specific Rubricator for Agriculture and Food, developed by CSAL on the basis of the Code of State Categories Scientific and Technical Information. It was found that during the study period, the highest number of documents was received in 2019, followed by a decline (in 2020), peaking in 2022. This decrease can be explained by the onset of the pandemic in March 2020 and the related restrictions in Russia, as well as by the reduction in the number of researchers, postgraduate and doctoral students in agricultural sciences. The obtained data will be used in planning of bibliographic work taking into account the accumulated volume of the flow of documents on various topics, also in identifying relevant topics for the development of progressive forms of information services; in bibliographic support of the acquisition of the collection.
This article presents an analysis of postcard descriptions in the electronic catalogues of the following libraries: the National Library of Belarus, the Presidential Library of the Republic of Belarus, the National Library of Russia, the Russian State Art Library, the Russian State Library. Notes help identify postcards and may contain the following information: image location, image colour, acquired features, information about the origin in the library collection, a verbal description of the image, and others. Abstracts and keywords are less frequently used elements in postcard descriptions.
BOOK CULTURE, DOCUMENTARY HERITAGE, PUBLISHING
Smolensk remained occupied between July 15, 1941, and September 25, 1943, during the Great Patriotic War. Despite all hardships, throughout 1941–1943 the Smolensk regional newspaper «Rabochiy Put» [«The Working Path»] and its special issue «Malyutka» [«The Baby»], for residents of districts of the Smolensk region temporarily subjected to German Fascist occupation, kept appearing in print. A complete set of issues of this special edition of the newspaper has been preserved in the archive of Smolensk local historian Leonid Vasilievich Kotov. The article recounts the history of the origin of the newspaper «Malyutka» those who created it, and how the newspaper was delivered to the occupied territory of the Smolensk region. It also examines its structure and content.
The article describes materials devoted to the liberation of Brest from Nazi invaders on 28 July 1944, published in Soviet newspapers on 29–30 July 1944. It provides information that during three years of occupation the German forces created a powerful, deeply echeloned fortified area in the Brest region—15–20 kilometers of approaches to Brest were transformed into a continuous fortified line, while the city itself was a strong military fortress. Nevertheless, despite the considerable enemy forces, the large quantity of weapons and military equipment, and the strict order of the German command to hold Brest “at any cost,” Soviet troops liberated the city in less than two days. The article analyzes the content of publications on the liberation of Brest in the central Soviet newspapers “Pravda” (organ of the Central Committee of the CPSU), “Izvestia” (organ of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR), “Krasnaya Zvezda” (organ of the People’s Commissariat for Defense of the USSR), as well as in the republican newspaper “Sovetskaya Belorussiya” and the Brest regional newspaper “Zarya” dated 29–30 July 1944.
READING, ENLIGHTENMENT, HUMANITIES AND SOCIO-CULTURAL COMMUNICATIONS
The article analyzes the online resources of Belarusian republican library websites dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Soviet people’s Victory in the Great Patriotic War. A review of website sections of six libraries has been carried out: the National Library of Belarus, the Yakub Kolas Central Scientific Library of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB), the I.S. Lupinovich Belarusian Agricultural Library of the NASB, the Republican Scientific and Technical Library, the Presidential Library of the Republic of Belarus, and the Republican Scientific Medical Library. Information is provided on virtual projects, virtual exhibitions, and other related materials. The study shows that numerous library projects and exhibitions launched prior to Victory Day remain in active development today. Several library websites continue to publish new materials and exhibitions commemorating the events and heroes of the Great Patriotic War.
The article is devoted to commemorative practices based on contemporary museum exhibitions dedicated to the events of the Second World War. It describes the presentation of wartime post-memory through museum instruments, as well as the modern interpretation of these events. The scientific and educational-exhibition project of the Loyev Museum of the Battle of the Dnieper, «Silhouettes of Victory», is based on a research initiative aimed at collecting and recording data obtained during anthropological (ethnographic) expeditions to the Loyev district, carried out by museum staff K.V. Semashko and G.A. Sivokhin between 2012 and 2019, as well as on the results of archival and search research conducted by the staff of the Museum of the Battle of the Dnieper. The informants of the project were real eyewitnesses and participants of the Second World War events in the Loyev district – witnesses and direct participants of those tragic events, who survived the war, most often in childhood and/or adolescence. The data obtained through research and search work were interpreted and presented in the museum exhibition with the use of modern multimedia technologies and, above all, through artistic interpretation and the presentation of collected scholarly materials by means of an art-vision approach to constructing the museum display.
The reference to the theme of the Great Patriotic War is incorporated into the ongoing process of shaping historical memory and fostering the development of modern Belarusian society. Exploring the facts, understanding their historical significance in national history, as well as preserving gratitude for the people’s feat are typical of all social institutions in the country, including libraries of different types and departmental affiliation. The article, through the example of activity areas of a republican sectoral scientific library, highlights the role of the library and information sphere in the national process. It presents a review of scientific activities of the I.S. Lupinovich Belarusian Agricultural Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, encompassing research, editorial publishing, and scientific organizational work, in the context of commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from German Fascist occupation and the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. It is shown that over the past two years the results of diverse research, search analytical, and scholarly educational activities related to the Great Patriotic War have been presented in scientific publications and conference reports, as well as in the form of an exhibition of materials and a digital information resource. In the course of editorial and publishing work, the outlined theme was embodied as the central topic of issues of the scholarly journal “Library & Information Discourse” and in the preparation of the monographic essay «“Zarya” – the partisan newspaper». Furthermore, two specialized round tables were organized, and the theme of the Great Patriotic War was incorporated into the problem field of two scientific conferences. It has been emphasized that this topic remains promising for further implementation in the scientific work of the library.
